Hudson River Information
Hudson Valley Pack & Paddle has the best selection of touring, recreational and whitewater kayaks in the Hudson Valley.
We are authorized dealers for top quality kayaks.
Our trained staff are avid paddlers who are happy to spend time with you discussing kayak design, performance and construction. Whether you are planning on taking short day trips on calm waters or more extended open water explorations, we will help you to select the kayak that is right for you.
The three most Frequently Asked Questions at our store.

What do I need to get started kayaking?
The basics you"ll need include four things.
1. A kayak, 2. A paddle, 3. A Personal Floatation Device/lifevest and 4. Some way to transport your boat. Determining the specific type and proper sizing of the gear you"ll need as well as finding what fits you most comfortably usually takes about an hour at our store. This is acheived by "trying on" different boats, paddles and pfd's and by discussing your plans, transportation needs and paddling goals with our staff.

Should I get a tandem, (a two person kayak) or a single person kayak?
This depends on a variety of factors. If you plan to always paddle with a partner, a small child or a pet, then a tandem kayak will work very well. However, if you would like to go paddling alone/solo frequently, you"ll definately have more enjoyment with one or more single kayaks. Tandem kayaks are great for families but are heavier than singles which can making loading and cartopping more difficult. Some people start with a tandem and eventually may buy one or more singles.

Do I need to take kayaking lessons?
If you plan on only taking short day trips on calm waters, like small lakes and ponds then answer to this question may be no. Learning to paddle a kayak on quiet water is a relatively easy task that most people can pick up over time. However,
this method can take a while as you learn by trial and error. With or without instruction it still takes some time to build the skill set and confidence necessary to embark on more challenging trips on larger lakes, rivers or the ocean. By taking a lesson or two early on from a qualified instructor you can speed up this proccess considerably. We recommend that you learn proper paddling technique and the important safety skills you need right from the start. With the knowledge and confidence you"ll gain from professional kayak instruction you"ll be able enjoy all of your paddling trips even more.
